The portion of the cervix that projects into the vagina, the ectocervix
(Ec), is covered with a stratified squamous epithelium. An abrupt
transition (arrow) from this squamous epithelium to columnar
epithelium, the endocervix (Enc), occurs at the entry to the cervical
canal (CC). The upper end, the internal os (IOs), communicates
with the uterine cavity, and the lower end, the external os (EOs),
communicates with the vagina.
