Fig. 11, 93W7236, Prostate, Senile, h&e
In the higher magnification view of the prostate gland, the
fibromuscular stroma is clearly identified immediately surrounding
the epithelium of the tubulo-alveoli. The intense staining of the
smooth muscle (SM) clearly distinguishes it from the fibrous
stromal connective tissue with which it is intimately intermingled.
There is no clear outline for bundles or layers of smooth muscle in
the prostate; rather, it is randomly arrayed throughout the stroma.
Concretions (C) are evident in the lumina of alveoli. The prostatic
epithelium is generally simple columnar, but there may be patches
that are simple cuboidal, squamous, or occasionally pseudostratified.
